Get ready to explore Sudbury!

With a collection of 17 experiences, our hosts, Sudbury Tourism certainly has curated an exciting line-up of options for you. This is an afternoon for ALL DELEGATES to get out an explore and experience all that Sudbury has to offer - and be inspired.

These Local Tours include participation from both media and industry delegates, assigned based on the selections you offered at time of registration and is included with your conference registration.

Confirmation of your Local Tour will be provided after conference registration closes and will be accompanied by a detailed itinerary.

12:30 pm : Depart from Host Hotel 
4:30 pm: Return to Host Hotel 

Notes:

  • Delegates are required to select your TOP 3 PREFERENCES, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. We will make effort to accommodate requests, noting that spaces are limited.
  • All tours will depart from the lobby of Holiday Inn Sudbury at 12:30pm 
  • A Boxed Lunch will be provided as part of your Local Tour experience, with the exception of three (3) tours that have indicated lunch is provided as part of the experience.
  • Note return time is anticipated to be 4:30pm but may vary depending on the location of the tour. 
  • Transportation will be provided and may include city buses or vans. 
  • Dress is casual and comfortable for these tours - take note of any additional items you may need to bring along based on your selection.

 

    1 . Local Tour #1: Science North

    Explore Canada’s second largest science centre and Northern Ontario’s most popular tourist attraction boasting four floors of science fun for all ages. Science North’s fun and friendly hands-on approach to science education is led by Bluecoats (real scientists and science communicators) who make interacting with the exhibits and live animal ambassadors even more informative and fun!
    On your tour get-up close to 400 free-flying tropical butterflies amidst more than 200 exotic plants in the Butterfly Gallery’s tropical environment. Twist, turn and tumble as you experience first-hand the gyroscopic forces that astronauts must face when training to control tumbling spacecraft. Be sure to visit Science North’s animal ambassadors and learn about the wildlife found in our own backyards. Discover what fish live in Ramsey Lake, learn how you can help at-risk species in Ontario, and even come face to face with a snake!

    2 . Local Tour #2: Dynamic Earth

    Dynamic Earth, Science North’s sister attraction is a hands-on science centre featuring one-of-a-kind earth science and mining experiences including a world-class underground mining tour. Put on a hard hat, and descend seven storeys underground to walk in the footsteps of Sudbury's miners. Discover the evolution of mining in the region, from the turn of the century to modern mining through the demonstration mine.

    Dynamic is Earth is also “Home of the Big Nickel”! Sudbury’s iconic attraction, the Big Nickel, is an exact replica of the 1951 Canadian nickel. It was built in 1964 and symbolizes the wealth that Sudbury has contributed to the Canadian economy through nickel production. The base enables the public to walk around and under the 13,000-kg coin, with barrier-free access. The perfect place for a selfie!

    NOTE: 

    • Closed toe shoes required and jackets are recommended.
    • The underground tour contains flashing lights. Seizure warning. Participation in the underground tour is optional.

    3 . Local Tour #3: Lake Laurentian Conservation Area

     

    The Lake Laurentian Conservation Area offers 2,350 acres of protected green space just minutes from the downtown. The conservation area includes a multi-use trail network which offers great scenic lookouts, is used both by hikers and bikers in the summer, and also includes snowshoe and groomed cross-country ski trails in winter. Experience the conservation area on land and water; hike through a variety of forest types to the 360 lookout across the lake, learn about the biodiversity of the area, then hop in a canoe or kayak to tour Lake Laurentian. This excursion will be led by a naturalist and the conservation areas supervisor, and is perfect for those wanting to experience nature and some of the best scenery that Sudbury has to offer. Cameras are encouraged for viewpoints and wildlife photo opportunities.

    NOTE:

    • Dress in comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes
    • Sturdy shoes/boots, hat, sunscreen, water (recommended 1L), small backpack if you have one
    • Optional: binoculars, bug spray, camera

    4 . Local Tour #4: Walk in the Footsteps of The Group of Seven
    Plein Air Painting Excursion

    Hosted by the Art Gallery of Sudbury. Visit the very spot the Group of Seven member A.Y. Jackson was inspired for his painting at Onaping High Falls. Learn about the Group of Seven and links to Onaping Falls and La Cloche area. Hike along the Onaping River to paint your own masterpiece en plein air guided by an Art Gallery of Sudbury artist/educator. (no painting experience required)

    NOTE:

    • Weather appropriate clothing – dress in layers
    • Good walking shoes or athletic shoes – absolutely no flip flops or sandals please
    • Sunscreen, bug spray, backpack to carry personal supplies

    5 . Local Tour #5: The Science of Sudbury's Landscape

    The Sudbury landscape isn’t what is used to be; from barren rock to lush forests. Experience the healing of the Greater Sudbury landscape and celebrate 40+ years of Regreening success. Guided by scientists who lead the Regreening project, you will visit notable sites across the city that will allow first hand comparison of industrial impacted barren landscapes to those that were treated and are in various stages of recovery. Walk in Jane Goodall’s footsteps on the Jane Goodall Reclamation Trail, named after internationally renowned scientist and environmentalist who opened the trail in 2002 and has left an inspiring impact on Greater Sudbury.

    • Appropriate footwear for walking on trails and weather appropriate clothing recommended.

    6 . Local Tour #6: Downtown Sudbury Walking Tour

    Downtown Sudbury is a hub of activity, arts, culture, festivals and events year-round. Take a tour of the many historical buildings, marvel at the spectacular murals, or visit the many one-of-a-kind shops, cafés, delectable restaurants such as The Fromo, Sapporro, Wander, Kuppajo!

    • Appropriate footwear for walking on trails and weather appropriate clothing recommended.

    7 . Local Tour #7: Distillery & Brewery Tour 

    Come see what Sudbury is brewing. Hop on the brew tour and visit Sudbury’s craft breweries and 100% grain-to-glass distillery. Experience Sudbury’s unique flavour of beer and spirits inspired by the Nickel City.

    Northerners know that around here, we do things differently. At Crosscut Distillery each bottle fuses local and unexpected ingredients with quality grains, cut and blended to create unique flavours, inspiring grain-to-glass enthusiasts with every sip. Stack honours the history and culture of Sudbury through their beers like Nickel City and Sudbury Saturday Night while 46 North offers uniques flavours like four legs Raspberry Berliner Weisse, and Creamsicle Cream Ale.

    8 . Local Tour #8: Viva Italia in Sudbury

    Ciao! Discover Sudbury’s proud Italian community with this delicious culinary tour and cooking class. Get your hands on a porchetta sandwich, a Sudbury staple. Meet some of the chefs, butchers and bakers entertaining Sudbury’s appetite. Stops include Sudbury’s favourite delis and a pasta making class with a local chef. Buon Appetito!

    9 . Local Tour #9: Ramsey Lake Tour

    Ramsey Lake is the second largest city-contained lake in the world. Walk the scenic boardwalk that wraps the shores of Ramsey Lake. Pass through the beloved Bell Park to Science North, with a few delightful surprises along the way before boarding the William Ramsey boat cruise to cap off the afternoon.

    See beautiful panoramas, gorgeous lakefront homes, serene sailboats, and people out enjoying the water while you relax onboard a one-hour cruise around Ramsey Lake located in the middle of the City of Greater Sudbury, Bell Park is the City’s largest urban waterfront park located in the heart of Greater Sudbury on the western shores of Ramsey Lake, an ideal natural landscape and favourite local spot drawing both visitors and residents for scenic walks along the waterfront, and warm sunny days at the beach.

    10 . Local Tour #10: Hit the Greens

    Take in 9 holes of golf at one of Sudbury’s most popular golf courses, Cedar Green. It offers tree lined fairways and water hazards on the front nine which are sharply contrasted with wide-open fairways and difficult greens on the back nine. Plus, you will finish your round with our version of amen corner. Holes 16, 17 & 18 will challenge golfers of all ability and provide for great entertainment

    NOTE: 

    • Clubs will not be provided, rentals are not available. PLEASE BRING  YOUR OWN.
    • No tank tops or jeans on the course.
    • Bring appropriate footwear.

    11 . Local Tour #11: Fat Biking & Disc Golf - in Kivi Park

    With over 480 acres of prominent landscape filled with lush Northern Forest, fresh waterways and distinguished rock of the Canadian Shield, Kivi Park is a breathtaking destination waiting to be explored.Kivi Park boasts 60+km for hiking and mountain biking. Get your heart rate pumping while spending the afternoon on the picturesque trails and challenge you fellow TMAC members to a game of disc golf.

    12 . Local Tour #12: Hike & Water Sports - at Kivi Park 

    With over 480 acres of prominent landscape filled with lush Northern Forest, fresh waterways and distinguished rock of the Canadian Shield, Kivi Park is a breathtaking destination waiting to be explored.The southern part of Kivi Park is home to our Crowley Lake Outpost. A beautiful lakeside paradise. Two hiking trails take you to multiple scenic views of the lake, the park and the City of Sudbury. Back at the outpost -  canoe, kayak and paddle board rentals allow you to explore the lake from an entirely different view. 

    NOTE:

    • Active clothing, bathing suit and towel are recommended 
    • Hiking footwear required

    13 . Local Tour #13: Porketta Bingo

    Rule #1 - Don’t yell BINGO!
    In Sudbury, we play Bingo for the tastiest Italian spiced pork, but you can’t yell BINGO!, only PORKETTA! Spend an afternoon playing a feisty game of Porketta Bingo at the Beef ‘n Bird Tavern and try your luck at getting your hands on the coveted (and delicious) prize.

    14 . Local Tour #14: Wanapitae First Nation - Indigenous Experience & Tour

    Visit the sacred land of the Wahnapitae First Nation of the Anishnawbek people. Experience a traditional ceremony and learn from Eagle Elder, tour the largest Indigenous dispensary at Creator’s Choice Indigenous Dispensary and experience Indigenous cuisine.

    15 . Local Tour #15: Picture This! Instagrammable Sudbury

    We’ve curated a photo-crawl to help you “get the shot”, and another one, and another one. Get a chance to get up close and personal with Stompin’ Tom Connors, life size mural of Alex Trebek, gorgeous grotto and the world’s largest mural. This is your chance to capture the magic of Sudbury’s scenery on this Instagram-worthy tour.

    16 . LOCAL TOUR #16 – Up Here Mural Tour

    Experience Sudbury’s urban art gallery with a tour of the UpHere Festival murals, including Canada’s Largest Mural, all 73,000sq. ft of it. Hosted by the folks from UpHere who have curated over 30 murals in Sudbury since 2013, hear the stories that have inspired the colourful transformation of downtown Sudbury.
